What to consider if an autopilot loses its signal

Questions about monitoring, stopping and returning to manual steering.

Leer en español

Identify dependencies

An autopilot can depend on power, sensors, communications and an actuator. Document the connections and consult how equipment responds when any of them fails.

Stopping and recovery

The installation must allow manual steering to be regained and provide suitable protections and stopping means. Details depend on the vessel and need qualified assessment.

Controlled testing

Plan failure tests in safe conditions with supervision. An autopilot does not replace a watch; do not induce failures when control cannot be safely recovered.

Questions for the installer

Which signals are monitored, how long does loss detection take and what does the actuator do? How is the crew alerted and manual steering recovered? Ask for answers specific to the installed hardware and wiring.

Simulation has limits

A test bench helps exercise scenarios but does not replace testing the complete vessel or cover every failure. Plan supervised tests with an immediate manual steering method.
