How to share boat instrument data over local Wi-Fi

The basics of viewing onboard instruments from tablets and laptops.

A local network for screens

Onboard Wi-Fi allows tablets and laptops to access local services without necessarily depending on internet access. The server and devices must be connected to the configured network.

Security and coverage

Protect access with suitable credentials, keep equipment updated and limit exposed services. Check coverage where devices will be used and ensure the power supply is reliable.

Screens and availability

The Open Marine interface is accessed through a browser. Data availability depends on connected sensors and on the server and network remaining operational.

Internet and local networking are different

A tablet can join the boat network even when that network has no internet access. The server and screen must communicate locally; features relying on external providers, such as some forecasts or updates, may still require connectivity. Test the two situations separately.

A simple pre-departure check

Connect the screen to the boat Wi-Fi, open the local application address and inspect instruments and charts. Repeat after disconnecting internet access and restore it afterwards. If only one screen fails, check its connection and address before changing sensor settings.

Security and maintenance

Use unique credentials, update the router and devices, and avoid exposing control services to the internet without appropriate configuration and protection. Document the network and keep recovery instructions accessible. Losing Wi-Fi should not leave the crew without an alternative navigation method.
