Network structure

An NMEA 2000 network connects devices using a backbone and drop cables. Follow the limits and requirements of the equipment and network components used.

Power and termination

Power, protection and terminators are part of the network design. Do not modify wiring by assumption: consult the manuals and relevant specifications.

Plan an expansion

Before adding a gateway or sensor, identify connectors, power consumption, space and supported messages. A professional can check the whole installation.

Before adding equipment

Document devices, the power connection, terminators and drops. Check consumption, connectors and messages against manuals. Do not add power or change termination without understanding the existing network.

After installation

Verify original equipment still works and the new source reaches the intended display. Label cables and record changes. Consult a qualified installer if protection or sizing is uncertain.
