Raspberry Pi on a boat: a compact navigation computer

Considerations for installing a small computer on an onboard network.

An onboard data hub

A compact computer can run services that collect instrument data and show it on screens connected to the boat network. Open Marine is designed to run on a Raspberry Pi or development computer.

Power and storage

Plan electrical protection, ventilation, moisture protection and suitable storage. Chart data can take considerable space, so plan backups and updates.

Availability and backup

Check startup and local access before departure. Keep appropriate independent navigation resources: any computer, network or power supply can fail.

What it can run and what it needs

An onboard computer can host Signal K, a chart service and a web interface. Sensors still need suitable inputs or gateways, and a tablet needs a local network to reach the server. Before installation, plan chart storage and backups, and check that startup does not depend on an external connection.

Installation plan

Locate the computer away from splashes and excessive heat; plan mounting, ventilation, protected power and maintenance access. Document shutdown, data locations and backup restoration. Fuse and cable choices must suit the actual system and be reviewed by a competent installer.

Recovery test

In port, check a cold start, connect a screen, inspect sensor readings and open local charts. After a controlled shutdown, restart and confirm that services and data return. Keep an independent navigation method: a single power or data source remains a point of failure.
