A tiled database

MBTiles stores map tiles in a SQLite database. It may contain raster or vector data; the format alone does not guarantee authorised, current nautical information.

Import and check coverage

Open Marine Charts can import MBTiles and serve tiles on the local network. Before departure, check the area, detail levels, symbology and data age on the device you will use.

Licences and backup

Use sources licensed for your intended use. Carry the navigation resources and charts required or appropriate for your vessel and area.

What the file contains and does not guarantee

MBTiles is a tile container that may hold raster or vector content. Its extension does not identify currency, suitable scale, source or permission to use the data. Keep that information with the file and verify the application supports its actual type.

Checking an import

Import the file, open its area on the onboard display and inspect several zoom levels, including approaches and alternatives. Repeat without internet access. If tiles are missing, distinguish absent coverage in the file from an import failure or display configuration.
