Powering a Raspberry Pi from a boat’s 12 V system

Electrical protection and stable power for an onboard navigation computer.

More than a USB socket

A 12 V boat supply can experience fluctuations and transients. Choose a suitable converter and protection according to the equipment manufacturers’ instructions.

Protection and location

Review fuses, cable sizing, connections, ventilation and moisture exposure. The computer supply must not compromise safety circuits or manual steering.

Test before departure

Check startup, stability with peripherals connected and recovery after power loss. A qualified installer should assess the specific system and its protections.

From battery to device

Map the complete path: battery, circuit protection, converter, cable and connectors to the computer and peripherals. Required current and margin depend on the actual equipment; a charger’s nominal voltage alone is not enough. Consult manufacturer specifications and have a competent installer size the circuit.

Symptoms worth recording

Restarts when an engine starts, USB disconnects or storage loss can indicate power or connection problems, but are not conclusive. Record when they occur and which devices were connected; measurement and professional inspection can find the cause without replacing parts at random.
